SALKANTAY – SANTA TERESA – MACHUPICCHU 5D / 4N

ITINERARY

DAY 01: Cusco/ Mollepata / Markuk’asa /Soraypampa.

We pick you up from the hotel at 5 in the morning. After a lovely journey by bus we arrive to Mollepata District (2900 m. It is a small community located uphill along the main road from Cusco to Abancay. Here we shall meet the horses and the horsemen, pack them up than we start to hike uphill about three hours. We shall have lunch at Markuk’asa (3500 m.). After a short rest we keep walking by the Irrigation channel we avoid to walk on the busy main road All through the way we have a spectacular view of the mountains.
After 4 hour walking we shall arrive to our campsite, called Soraypampa (3900m).

DAY 02: Soraypampa /Salkantay Pass/ Challhuay.

We leave from Soraypampa (3900 m.) after an early breakfast. It will be a hard day because we have to climb up to the 07 snakes pass. At this point we reach the 4600 m, the highest part of our track to Machu Picchu. All through the way but especially from this height we shall have fantastic view of the second highest peak of the mountains, named Salkantay, a stunning snow covered mountain (6,271 m). Also we shall have an unforgettable view of Humantay and Huayanay mountains as well. Small lakes and moraines make the countryside more beautiful. Naturally the flora and fauna of this region is very unique. We plan to hike five hours before lunch. Choosing the lunch place is depending on weather. After a proper rest you will have time to take fantastic photos of the surrounding hills. From this place we walk downhill, all through the way we will see lovely small streams, many kind of colourful birds, and unusual flora. Late in the afternoon we finish the hard day in CHALLHUAY. This is the place where we shall have our campsite. Our cook is waiting us a lovely dinner. I draw your kind attention that from this point starts the cloud forest region, the semitropical weather, where the mosquitoes could disturb us.

DAY 03: Challhuay / La Playa

Wake up call at six in the morning than we have a full energy breakfast. We start the third day hiking to Wiñay Poqo where we shall have our lunch.
We go down hill is pretty easy walk, on the way we reach the high jungle zone known as Ceja de Selva. Here we can find coca, coffee and several native fruits plantations. In the afternoon we keep walking an other two hours down hill. Our campsite will be at LA PLAYA village. After a tasty dinner we can have a nice sleep in our tents.

If some of you want to enjoy a nice bath at the Creek of Santa Teresa River, we have enough time to do it.

DAY 04: La Playa / Aguas Calientes Town

In the morning we continue our adventure using the local transportation (Local Bus),the bus takes about twenty minutes to Lucma; there is a possibility to go by foot, if the transportation is not available. We start our climb uphill about three hours to Llactapata (recently Inca Site) which is famous for a “great condor view of Machu Picchu. ”. Here we enjoy Box Lunch. After a short rest we continue walking down hill for about two and a half hours. We reach Hydroelectric Station about three in the afternoon. We will take the local train to Agues Clients (45 minutes).

If you wish to visit to the thermal bath, you can have the possibility. The thermal hot springs gives you a pleasure after finishing the trail. Entrance fee to the hot springs 10.00 Peruvian Soles. After a refreshing bath you meet the guide for Dinner in a local restaurant t(2080 m / 6864 ft.).

DAY 05: Machu Picchu /Cusco.

Early wake up, after breakfast we catch the first bus at 5:30 in the morning to Machu Picchu. A two and a half hour guided tour will give you the most unforgettable impressions of the Inca City. We can discover the fantastic stonework, the architecture, and the unique engineering work of the XV th century Inca Empire. The temples, stairways, the palaces. the ritual baths, gardens with the most unique watering system are among the Seven Wonders of the World. Machu Picchu is the most outstanding feat of engineering in all-ancient America.
After the sight seeing can explore the mysterious city by you. If you have enough energy you can climb Huayna Picchu (2720m) it takes about 45 minutes to reach the top

You will meet your guide in Aguas Calientes. After having lunch he will give you the train tickets back to Cusco. The train leaves at 3.55 pm and we will arrive to Cusco around 8.45 in the evening.

If you decide to spend an extra night in Aguas Calientes it can be arranged. This option is very popular as it allows more time to explore Machu Picchu. You can also go back to the thermal medical bath of the town.
